Dr. Mark Prysi: The Human Form
During his time at Washington and Lee University, Dr. Mark Prysi pursued his interest in art, particularly of the Italian Renaissance, of which he took many classes. Intrigued at how art, ideas, and writings at the time had gone through such an empowering “rebirth”, Dr. Mark Prysi liked to imagine the same type of rebirth of face and body. Based on the interests he explored in his classes, Dr. Mark Prysi began to take on sculpture as an art.
Dr. Mark Prysi found that being able to shape and construct the human face and body was a liberating and educating experience. While he would review visions latent in his mind, how the ideal face might look, variations based on different proportions and backgrounds, Dr. Prysi found that in being able to put enact these ideals in a physical form, he was able to develop his idea of what that ideal aesthetic was, and to challenge himself to create a wide range of beauty.
Dr. Mark Prysi: Sculpture
While at first he was able to pleasantly surprise himself with the sculptures he would make, over time, in his attempt
to communicate the ideal he had inside into clay and stone, Dr. Mark Prysi was able to zero in on the exact look he originally had in mind. As time went on, Dr. Mark Prysi was able to shape, smooth, and form any face and body into exactly what he envisioned, to review his work and then improve upon his designs with variety and detail.
Of all the Renaissance artists Dr. Mark Prysi studied and received inspiration from, the sculptors were his favorites. Michelangelo, of particular, was of great fascination. His work on such classics as The David seemed, in Dr. Mark Prysi’s opinion, to embody the ideal human aesthetic, as perfect as it could be in the mind, in an actual physical form. The passion to strive to achieve a similar feat, to actualize the ideal forms and aesthetic he could see in his mind, became a great motivating force in Dr. Mark Prysi’s life and professional career.
Dr. Mark Prysi’s attention to detail and apparent perfectionism were well suited to sculpture, and to a great deal, it was his experience sculpting that led Dr. Mark Prysi on his career to becoming a plastic surgeon. After all, what could be better suited to a man whose passions are the aesthetic, meticulous detail, and service to his fellow man?
